For me it is something like a garnish to idli or dosai murungai keerai podi there are many memories associated with it. At the age of 7, I was enrolled in a boarding school. I was a boarding student for 17 years.

To be away from home and to be dependent on the mess in the hostel Amma used to always worry about mine keerai taking over. Keerai of tamil means any leafy vegetable. One way to ensure that I have enough greens in my diet is to turn them into powders or floor home and send it to me. I can have two more idli or dosai when floor is on the side.

One of the favorite memories of the boarding school days are these podi packages, peanuts and sesame ladusand pickles that come from my mother's kitchen, carefully wrapped in love. My friends also often waited impatiently for my mother's dirty appetizers and pickles. They were a lifeguard during my days at the hostel.

Back then, when communication was mainly through letters, I used my long wish list in every letter sent home. Moringa podi was always on the wish list. The scent that spreads in the hostel room every time I open those love packages from my mother and that the pure happiness of household items is still kept in my mind as fond memories.

Rewinding forward, I am now the mother of two beautiful girls and nothing has changed much as far as these love packages from my mother are concerned. Even now I'm sending her my home cooking wish list podis and wait for her to send them to me as a courier. The only change is that earlier my wish list was on these blue internal letters, and now they reach it as WhatsApp messages or phone calls. 🙂

Moringa Chutney Powder for Dosa and Idli

Usually drum sheets or murungai ellai are used to make poriyal, kootu, Indian deer and spoiling kulambu, but here the dried moringa leaves are powdered and used as an ingredient in the chuck.

This special moringa leaves recipe for chutney or murungai keerai podi, as we call it, is served as a dip for dosa or idli, along with sesame oil or coconut oil or coconut oil. It also goes well with rice. Sometimes I have it with bread.

How to make Murungai Keerai Podi for Dosa?

The process of making drumsticks is simple. It can be made with ingredients that are easily available in any Indian cuisine. So here goes the recipe for moringa powder, which is complete with a dish garnish for breakfast.

  • Drum sheets: 2 cups
  • Formal route: 2 tbsp
  • Chana gave: 3 tbsp
  • Ground walnuts: 4 tbsp.
  • Sesame seeds: 1 tbsp
  • Red chili: 10 or according to the level of your spice
  • Asafetida / Hing: ¼ teaspoon
  • Salt: as required


  • Wash the drum leaves thoroughly in turmeric
  • Dry the washed drum leaves well in the shade
  • To see if the moringa leaves are dry, make sure the leaves crumble easily when crushed with your hands.
  • In a pan, dry roasted on low flame, urad dal, chana dal, peanut and sesame seeds separately one by one.
  • Keep them aside to cool.
  • On a very low flame, dry bake the dried drums for a few seconds.
  • Once everything has cooled, add the hinge and salt.
  • Now let it dust.
  • Start with the leaves, urad dal and chana dal with salt and a hinge. To the dust I am rude.
  • Then add the sesame seeds and peanuts. This ensures that the powder does not become sticky.
  • Mix well with a spoon and after it cools, store it in an airtight container.

Your drum finger leaves the cartridge poles ready. You can store it in a dry airtight container and it will stay good for a month. You can also put it in the fridge if you want to keep the lungs of the chutney for a long time. Morungai kerai remain fresh for almost 6 months if stored properly in the refrigerator.

Serve the pods with sesame or coconut oil as a pie for idlis and doses. Your children will not resist taking a stick in this shape. And I'm sure just like my kids, your kids will eat 2 bucks more than usual if this moringa miracle pody is a side dish.
