What is cloud dough?

Cloud dough gets its name from its texture – this is probably the softest, smoothest play dough EVERYONE! It's incredibly silky to the touch, so it's especially soothing to play with.

What I love about cloud dough is that it only takes two ingredients that you probably already have at home! It doesn't get any easier!

Balm after balm

There are several different variations of cloud dough – you can see that it is made with lotion, hair conditioner or even baby oil.

We used hair conditioner to make a cloudy dough because we had an extra bottle on hand. however, we will also tell you how to make a cloudy dough with lotion!

To make colored cloud dough, add food coloring to the conditioner before adding cornstarch. Once your balm is smooth, even in color, add the cornstarch and stir as usual.

Finish kneading by hand until the dough is no longer sticky.

We used 1 cup of conditioner and 2 cups of cornstarch, but you can make a larger or smaller batch by adjusting the quantities. All you have to do, be sure to stick to a ratio of 1 part conditioner and 2 parts cornstarch.

Advices:

  • If the dough is too sticky, add another tablespoon of cornstarch at a time until it no longer sticks to your hands.
  • To prevent the dough from sticking to your hands, dip your hands in coconut oil before playing.
  • You can use any conditioner! Cheap air conditioning works great – you don't have to spend a lot of money to do this!
  • Can't find cornstarch? It can also be called cornmeal, depending on where you live.

How to store cloudy dough

This homemade silk play dough can last at least a week if you keep it in a sealed airtight container. Either a zippered bag or a storage container will work just perfectly!

To make your play dough last as long as possible, always wash your hands before playing.

If your dough starts to dry, you can work in a little more conditioner to revive it!

Discard your dough if it shows any signs of mold.

How to make a cloudy dough with lotion

If you do not have enough extra hair conditioner on hand, you can make a cloudy dough instead of lotion.

Just use the same amount of lotion as you would a hair conditioner and mix according to the instructions.
